Your Child is Being Abducted: Do You Shoot or Don't Shoot? Find Out...

12/17/2014

The worst nightmare of any homestead defender is a family member, wife, daughter, or son, being abducted - and even people who consider themselves good shooters will fail to perform in this scenario because they're so hopped up on adrenaline and fear.

If a family member is grabbed by an armed man,  What do you do? Shoot? Take cover? Call 911? Chad Wade -- US Special Forces Operator -- shows us a mind-blowing, ruthlessly-calculated approach to this horrific situation.

Self Defense Tips

Do as much as you can to avoid a confrontation - "anticipation and avoidance" are the key words. If you get caught up in a situation, try to talk to an aggressor without provoking them. Practice relaxation, as appearing fearful or stressed can actually provoke an attack. Remember that body language is important in aggressive situations, so maintain a comfortable distance between you and the aggressor.

Use a gas or electronic attack alarm, as these give out a short piercing sound and will temporarily disorientate an attacker, giving you enough time to escape. Carry it somewhere where you can get to it quickly - don't leave it buried at the bottom of your bag. If you don't have an alarm, just make a noise yourself by screaming as loud as you can, or shouting "call the police" - if you're loud enough this can be just as effective as a personal alarm. If you have an alarm, use it and shout as well.

Steady yourself if danger threatens. Panic can disable you, so again it’s useful to learn how to keep control in a difficult situation. And if you must fight back, adopt what police term the "bash and dash" approach. Primary targets are the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, throat, groin, knees or shins; choose whichever is easiest to get to.

If held from behind don't struggle forward, you'll only exhaust yourself. Instead throw yourself backwards to surprise your attacker or stomp on the lower leg or foot.

You have the right to defend yourself with reasonable force and this includes using items you have with you such as an umbrella, bag, briefcase or keys. However, don't carry or use anything that the law would regard as an offensive weapon. Once you've achieved your primary aim of stunning or surprising your attacker, get away as fast as you can. If you manage to overcome them don't attack again, you could be putting yourself in more danger or you could end up being charged with assault.

These are just the very basics of self-defense, but to learn more about it and get some exercise at the same time, find a local self-defense class and encourage your family along to join you. Just remember "anticipation and avoidance" are the best forms of defense.

Grappling Techniques for Self Defense

12/1/2014

By Michael Pace

"I remember back in the seventies when kickboxing became popular. It was said and commonly thought that kickboxing was the 'way' and that your karate or taekwondo techniques were obsolete. In the past few years with the advent of the UFC and other 'no holds barred' tournaments, that kickboxing, karate, kung fu and just about any other striking arts were 'proven' ineffective for self defense.

Here is my view of some of the realities. First, how often is the average person who is attacked on the street going to come up against an experienced and trained Brazilian ju-jitsu practitioner or other grappling art student? Probably, never. Why? Because most street thugs do not have the self discipline to attend classes and practice their art for years to become good at it.

More often those attacked are done so by ordinary criminals who, although might be street savvy, are not particularly efficient at any martial art. For self defense to be effective we must prepare ourselves for the 'most likely' attack. That probably won't be from a trained grappler, trying a quick, one leg takedown. No, more than likely is will be one of the 30 most common street attacks we address in Street Self Defense 101.

Some will say that the UFC has 'proven' that grappling is the best in all out 'fights'. While I might agree with them in the ring (although today most of the champions have crossed trained in the striking arts as well), street self defense is another issue.

Real self defense must consider that there is a good chance that there may be more than one attacker. Grappling has a definite disadvantage here. So should one ignore grappling altogether? No, I think that a few basics should be learned. More than that would require a great deal of training and practice to make the techniques cognitively available under duress. One should learn the basics so that should they find themselves on the ground with an attacker, they can combine their striking skills with some basic grappling knowledge that could help them survive.

It comes down to this. If you are not willing to devote many years, several times a week, to learn grappling skills, it may be better to just learn a few important defenses and escapes from the ground and focus your limited time on striking skills that are more apt to come into play in real street self defense.

Women's Self Defense

11/2/2014

Can a one hundred and ten pound women really defend herself against a two hundred pound man? The answer...

It depends. First it depends on who that 200 pound man is! Is he a college football player (if you can even find a 200 pound college football player these days)? Is he a trained martial artist, boxer or wrestler? Is he a hardened street thug? Then, probably not. I say probably because there are some women who have been joining the women's self defense trend and probably could put up enough of a fight that they might have a chance if not to defeat the guy but maybe to get away.

Next, it depends on the women. Is she strong and in good physical shape? Has she had a lot of good self defense training? Does she know how to use the element of surprise to give herself the winning advantage? Does she know how to turn ordinary items into powerful fighting weapons? With these advantages maybe she could escape or maybe even defeat the guy. Women's self defense has become much more popular in the last few decades but there's still many women who are completely unprepared to defend themselves or even survive in the event of an attack

Unfortunately the martial arts world in general has given women the wrong impression. They tell her she can defeat a man with the traditional techniques they teach. More often then not, she will forget the specific technique for the particular attack long before she will ever need it. They also do not allow for the adrenal rush which will certainly overcome her. Her mind will be blank trying to figure out what to do.

Self defense instructors owe it to our women students to teach them practical, simple techniques that can be applied to multiple situations so that she can mentally wire in a minimal number of responses that she will have at her immediate disposal, even when adrenalized.
